Shopping in Guildford

Guildford is one of the best shopping destinations in Surrey. It boasts three extensive shopping centres, as well as department stores, and two high-streets full to the brim with independent boutiques and well-known brands. The Friary Centre is located in the heart of Guildford, just a short walk from the train station. It is Guildford’s biggest shopping centre and home to the likes of Zara, Primark, TopShop, Hollister, and Superdry. The entirety of the top floor is a handily placed food court, with a wide variety of pit-stop options for keen shoppers.

Coming out of the Friary, you will be met with North Street and White Lion Walk. Both contain a number of shops and restaurants. For more shopping, it is best to cut through White Lion Walk to the infamous Guildford High Street. At the bottom, next to the River Wey, is department store Debenhams. At the opposite end of the High Street is a giant House of Fraser, home to luxury brands such as Michael Kors, Mulberry and Chanel.  The High Street itself holds a mix of brands, from H&M and WHSmith, to Anthropologie and Whistles.

Transport Links Guildford

Just a short walk from Guildford town centre is Guildford Station. The station has eight platforms, with services running to London Waterloo, Portsmouth Harbour, Reading, and Redhill. There are both fast and slow services to these destinations, taking in popular stops such as Woking, Clapham Junction, and Gatwick Airport. Fast services to London Waterloo take just under or just over 30 minutes, with fast services to Portsmouth Harbour around 60 minutes’ journey time.

London Road (Guildford) is a railway station located right at the top of town, in the suburbs of Merrow and Burpham. The station is included on the slow London Waterloo services via Chobham and Ashtead.

Those local to Surrey fear Guildford one-way system during rush hour traffic, however, many still battle it daily. The Park and Ride services from Artington (200) or Guildford Spectrum (100) are a great alternative for commuters and shoppers. There are a number of public car parks in Guildford and these can become busy at weekends, but it is not impossible to find a space if you have some patience.
