Moving to Shropshire

Shropshire RemovalsThe towns and villages throughout Shropshire are some of the most beautiful in the country. The quiet and expansive countryside is enjoyed by walkers and outdoor enthusiasts and the landscape is dotted with ancient churches and country inns.

Shropshire’s major county towns are located in the north. Shrewsbury can be found just nine miles away from the Welsh border and is known for its fantastic period buildings that date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. The historic town is famed for being the birthplace of Charles Darwin and visitors can see Mount House (the Grade II listed Georgian building) where he was born.

Just 20 minutes from Shrewsbury is the new town of Telford – the largest town in Shropshire. It came to being in the 1960s and has blossomed rapidly ever since. Telford is popular with shoppers due to its large shopping centre.

Oswestry is heavily influenced by Wales due to being so close to the border in the north. The market town dates back to the 12th century and many of the street and places names are of Welsh origin. Furthermore, many citizens of Oswestry speak Welsh and English.

Another market town in Shropshire is historical Ludlow. Like many of the towns, many listed buildings are dotted throughout, including stunning medieval and Georgian structures.

In contrast with the slightly more built up regions of the north, the south is much more rural. The Shropshire Hills are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty rich with steep valleys and alpine forests.

Days Out in Shropshire

If you move to Shropshire, you won’t be short of things to do at the weekend! If you have little ones Park Hall Farm is an award-winning farm park with adventure playgrounds, tractor rides, and animals that like attention. Similarly, Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom in Telford has over 120 different species of animals from baby lambs to lemurs.

A fantastic adventure for all the family is Blists Hill Victorian Town. It is one of the ten Ironbridge Gorge Museums and often the most popular. Visitors can explore the open-air museums and experience the Victorian way of life in the late 1800’s. Life is re-enacted by townsfolk who go about their daily lives, in traditional dress, like an authentic Victorian community.

Another historic working farm is Acton Scott – the turn of the century farm used in the BBC’s Victorian Farm television programme.

Located in Shifnal is the award-winning Royal Air Force Cosford Museum. The museum houses one of the largest aviation collections in the country, with 70 historic aircraft displayed in three wartime hangars and within the National Cold War Exhibition.
