Tuesday 6th September saw Britannia hold its AGM. During the course of the meeting, Mike Devereux of Britannia Devereux in Billingham was awarded a lifetime achievement award to commemorate his retirement and departure from the Britannia Board. Mike in turn took the opportunity to pay tribute to another stalwart of the moving industry; his long time friend and sparring partner David Trenchard of Britannia Leatherbarrows of Bournemouth. Mike and David have been true ambassadors for both Britannia and the general moving industry for many years. In their lighter moments they have become known as the Statler and Waldorf of the moving business or ‘Grumpy’ and ‘Smoggy’ to their friends in Britannia. To mark David’s retirement Mike awarded David with the magnificent trophy seen here in our photo. It acknowledged not only a long standing business partnership but also a long standing friendship.
Asked how he felt about his award David said “I first met Mike when we were both very young chaps, about 19, we were both working for our family Removal Businesses at the two ends of the UK, North East and Deep South. We have met up regularly throughout the years through our voluntary work for the British Association of Removers, the Training Institute and over the past 25 years through our participation in Britannia Movers International.
It was always great to share experiences and swap stories and over the past few years our contributions through the Britannia In house Internet Blog has brought good humour and alternative views to various discussions contributed by Smoggie from the North and Grumpy from the South. We both reached 65 this August, we still will work but at a much lesser intensity. It was a great surprise when Mike presented the award, very apt and just demonstrates that humour always has a very important place in life.”
