Moving to York

York is just 40 miles from the east coast, and is championed as one of the most beautiful cities in the UK. It benefits from a thriving economy, excellent schools and strong commuter links both north and south, including London. It is not unsurprising to find out that properties to buy and rent in York are highly desirable.

There are a variety of properties to buy and rent in York. Homes in the city range from luxury riverside apartments and Victorian townhouses to large country-style detached homes and new-build starter properties.

Some of the most popular villages and towns in York include Terrington, Coxhold, Helmsley and Sutton-on-the-Forest. Malton is also growing in popularity and is known as a foodie town. If you are after period homes, Friars Terrace (next to the river) and the Bootham area have properties full of character. Bootham has some particularly south after historic townhouses.

If you would prefer something new, the up and coming area of Clementhorpe and Westgate are home to newly-built apartment and homes to both buy and rent.

Schools in York

York is renowned for having some of the best state and private schools in the country. There are countless primary schools, some of which are Church of England or Catholic faith focused. Which primary school your child attends will depend on your catchment area, so parents moving to York should look at properties in a certain area if they have their heart set on a specific school. Clifton Green Primary, Hempland Primary and Poppleton Road Primary are three of the most popular.

In terms of state secondary schools, there are nine available in York. Out of these nine, Ofsted have ranked six of them as ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’. Huntington School, Joseph Rowntree School and Millthorpe School are all ‘good’. All Saints RC School, Fulford School and Manor CofE School are ‘outstanding’.

York Transport Links

York city centre is enveloped by a ring road and a variety of different A roads spur off in all directions. The A1(M) is easily accessible in the west and the A19 southbound will take drivers to the M62. Hull and Leeds are about an hour’s drive away.

York is a major transport hub of Yorkshire and the train station has 11 platforms. Commuters can get to London Kings Cross in a timely 2 hours 12 minutes and Leeds is just a 25-minute journey if you hop on the very regular fast services. Other trains call at Scarborough, Doncaster, Sunderland, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Hull and Harrogate.
