Britannia Anchor Sees Positive Change Thanks to Real Living Wages

Britannia Anchor Removals has recently featured in the Manchester Evening News, highlighting the positive effects of the branch becoming a Living Wage employer.

Chris Smallwood, who runs the North Manchester removals company, reported that profits for the branch have been ten times higher since paying their employees the living wage. Britannia Anchor has also seen staff taking fewer days off, which has saved the branch money. Before they became a Living Wage employer in 2016, there were around 131 days missed by staff. Since then, Anchor Removals sees fewer than 20 absent days per year, even though the team size has doubled.

Chris said: “I’ve heard so many times from the business community that it’s not possible for small businesses to pay higher rates of pay…Paying better wages and giving all round better conditions is good for your business”.

The Living Wage Campaign aims to help both businesses and employees. According to the Living Wage Campaign, 86% of businesses say paying the living wage has improved the reputation of the business and 75% say it has increased motivation and retention rates for employees. Individuals, in turn, earn a wage they can live on, so they can meet their everyday needs.

Making a Difference

Britannia Anchor Removals is proud to be a small business that is making a difference in the removals industry. Many employees in this sector find themselves on zero-hour contracts or day rates that make it difficult to live on or to plan for the future.

In an effort to fight this issue, Britannia Anchor Removals has no staff on zero-hour contracts. All our employees are on an annual salary and all employees are part of our pension scheme. This means that our team members will earn the same whether they work a 50-60 hour week in peak time, or a 0-hour week off-peak.

We are proud to be able to offer our employees a secure and stable working environment with job security. We have removed four of our 10 employees from an unemployed status and have also taken three out of cash-in-hand work to give them a regular, steady income.
