Britannia Harrison & Rowley Celebrates 100 Years

Britannia Harrison & Rowley, one of the founding members of Britannia Movers International, is celebrating its 100^th anniversary this year.

Harrison & Rowley began life in Bedford and was joined with Mr Harrison and Mr Rowley’s furniture shop, selling second-hand furniture. Not content with limitations, they also provided cleaning services as well as fitting carpets, curtains, and blinds with a made-to-measure service. Starting as a partnership, Mr Rowley sadly passed in 1923, just a year after the business was founded. However, his name was retained to honour the pair’s beginnings.

As part of their service, Harrison & Rowley delivered the furniture bought from the shop. At first, the furniture was delivered by horse and carts, before moving on to vans with the development and popularization of the automobile. They realised that when furniture wasn’t being sold, the vans were made redundant. So, ever the entrepreneurs, it was decided that the vans would be put to use as removals vehicles.

The businesses prospered thanks to the removals service, so after the Second World War, the decision was made to focus solely on removals. New branches were opened in Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire and the business eventually expanded into offering storage services too.

In 2011, brothers Mark and Alistair Spooner bought the company, expanding the storage offerings by building self-storage units. Today, Britannia Harrison & Rowley continues to operate with a base in Bedfordshire, offering a range of removals and storage services for both domestic and business customers. They were the first Bedfordshire removals company to be awarded the British Standard EN 12522 for domestic removals for private individuals.
