Celebrating 40 Years of Britannia Movers

This month, Britannia Movers International celebrates 40 years of operation. Formed in 1981, Britannia started off as a cooperative group of just 14 companies. Today, Britannia is an internationally recognised brand with more UK depots than any competitor. Celebrating this milestone birthday is an exciting time for the entire Britannia family and particularly poignant for those who have worked with the company since the early days.

How did Britannia Movers International begin?

Britannia was born as a response to the increase in shipping traffic to the principal Commonwealth countries in the 1970s. Minutes taken from the first ever business meeting detail discussions around rates, advertising and future expansion. Furthermore, did you know that Britannia wasn’t the only name discussed? Seahorse was considered before the full name of Britannia Movers International was settled upon.

Conversations around expansion clearly went well. Since 1981 Britannia has evolved into a large network of member companies and overseas partners who facilitate both local and global removals. With a philosophy of togetherness, family, and a commitment to professional service it is no surprise that Britannia continues to grow from strength to strength.

The removals industry today is very different compared to the 1980s. Britannia has always been an agile company, evolving with the times as the industry has changed. The installation of a national group and a central hub to consolidate the shipping operation was an initial stepping-stone, before further progression into the corporate moving market in the 90’s. Fast forward to present day and Britannia now has a global network of overseas partners and a portfolio of corporate clients from a variety of industry sectors.

Britannia today

Over the years Britannia HQ has moved around. We began in Stourbridge in the West Midlands before moving to New Malden and then Croydon. Today, the main office is in Merstham, just off the M25 in Surrey. Britannia purchased the land in Merstham in 2016, designing and erecting a purpose-built Britannia hub. The plot comprises of our central offices, warehouse and shipping centre.

However, our branches span the UK. From Cornwall to Glasgow, and everywhere in between, there is not an area of the UK that we do not cover. Britannia has also welcomed overseas members in Spain, Capetown and Johannesburg enhancing the international profile of the group.

Britannia’s 40th birthday

Unlike previous milestone birthdays, Britannia has not been able to organise any celebrations or promotional events due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, this will be the second year we have not run our annual conference, for the same reason. Nevertheless, celebrations will be planned for when circumstances permit. There are, however, local festivities planned around the network as well as fundraising efforts designed to celebrate Britannia’s 40th landmark while benefitting worthy causes connected to the wide range of business partnerships Britannia holds.

It is no secret that the past year has been difficult for companies around the world and in the UK. However, we are proud of all the moves we have facilitated for our wonderful and supportive customers. We look forward to continuing to provide a friendly and professional service throughout 2021 and beyond.

Despite the difficulties of the past 12 months, the entire Britannia team will toast to a bright future. It is because of the dedication of the staff across the Britannia network, the global relationships that have been built, commercial partnerships and goodwill in a wonderful and unique industry that has allowed Britannia to flourish and look ahead to another 40 years of growth and a successful future.
