Malmesbury was the highest ranked area in Wiltshire for the best places to live. This town has a rich history; it was once the site of an Iron Age fort and is home to Malmesbury Abbey, built in the 12th century.
The town itself has charming streets to explore, with a mixture of quirk independent shops and high street retailers. The River Avon winds around the town and it’s close by to the Cotswolds, both offering gorgeous scenery for walks.
Malmesbury holds an array of festivals and events every year, including the eclectic WOMAD festival and the Malmesbury Festival & Carnival with a variety of fun activities and a procession through the town.

Sherston is a village around five miles west of Malmesbury, near the Gloucester border. It was the second highest ranking for Wiltshire areas in the best places to live. It’s known for its strong community spirit, with various sporting teams, arts clubs, and other activities held for all the village to enjoy, such as the annual carnival and picnic.
The village is home to a few great quality pubs that serve traditional pub grub, a convenient shop, a doctor’s surgery and a few primary schools, as well as a small café and a wine merchant. This quaint village is surrounded by beautiful countryside and is close enough to Malmesbury for when residents need bigger shops or broader amenities.

The market town of Devizes is the third highest ranked area in Wiltshire. Its history is steeped in Medieval lore and has over 500 listed buildings within the town. Devizes has three major attractions – the Wadworth Brewery, the Wiltshire Museum, and the 29 Caen Hill Locks on Kennet and Avon Canal.
As well as a regular market, the town also has a variety of independent boutiques and major high street brands, with well-rated eateries too. Devizes holds a few annual events in the town, including an Art Festival, a Food Festival, and an International Street Festival. Marlborough is a market town on the River Kennet, 10 miles southeast of Swindon. It’s the fourth highest ranked location in Wiltshire on the best places to live list, thanks to its picturesque countryside and modern attractions.
It’s said that Marlborough is home to the burial place of the wizard Merlin, and Merlin’s Mound can be found in Marlborough College grounds. There’s also the Merchant’s House, a 17th-century home open to visitors which can be found on the high street. As well as a rich history, Marlborough boasts a vibrant shopping district and regular events, such as the Marlborough Literature Festival and the Open Studios, where local artists open their studios for visitors.

Bradford-on-Avon is a market town in west Wiltshire, close to the Somerset border. It’s close to the idyllic Cotswolds and has lovely walks along the River Avon. The town also enjoys its own quaint high street with a mix of charming and useful shops and eateries.
The town is known for its community spirit with a full calendar of events throughout the year, including pancake races, music festivals, food and drink festivals, art exhibitions, and pet shows.

Whilst Salisbury is the sixth highest place in Wiltshire on this list, in 2019 it was named the best place to live in the UK by the Sunday Times. It’s been noted for its friendly and welcoming community as well as its attractive scenery.
This cathedral city in the southeast of Wiltshire is located on the edge of the Salisbury Plain, home to Stonehenge. Salisbury has a strong culture of music and the arts, dating back centuries. An annual pageant is held every St George’s Day, with origins that are said to go back to the 13th Century, and an annual international arts festival also takes place in the city.

Tisbury is a large village 13 miles west of Salisbury. It’s the largest settlement located in the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, providing gorgeous countryside for visitors and residents to explore.
The village is well connected, with a train station that provides regular services to London. The village itself also has a lot to offer, with a leisure centre that has an open-air heated swimming pool, an amateur dramatic society and annual arts festivals.
The average price for property in Tisbury is £490,525, with detached homes fetching an average price of £703,750 and flats selling for around £175,000.
Warminster is an ancient market town in southwest Wiltshire, on the western edge of the Salisbury Plain. As well as stunning countryside, the town also offers Warminster Lake Pleasure Grounds, with a skate park, children’s play area, tree trail, tennis courts, and café.
The town boasts many beautiful buildings, such as the Athenaeum Centre and the Town Hall. Warminster has a good mix of independent shops and major chains and hosts a few annual events, such as live music festivals and a Christmas market.
