Lydney is one of the four market towns in the Forest of Dean and is located on the bank of the River Severn. In times gone by, the riverside dock was used to import and export coal, iron, and timber. Today, however, it is used as a mooring for boats and yachts.
Lydney is a charming location that has a village feel and a real sense of community. Being surrounded by woodland and countryside, but benefitting from the amenities of the town, makes the area a very popular place to live.
Lydney is known as the Gateway to the Forest, making it a beautiful place to explore – the Forest of Dean Sculpture trail winds its way through some incredible woodland. There is also a picnic site and children’s playground to enjoy in nice weather. The Gavellers Café is on site and is famed for its full English breakfasts.
Lydney sits just west of the A48 which goes north to Gloucester and south down to Chepstow. Just past Chepstow, drivers can connect to the M4, M5 and M48. There are also a number local and regional bus routes to help those living in Lydney and working or going to school in the surrounding areas.
Lydney railway station is comprised of two platforms and sits on the Gloucester to Newport line. Although the station is unstaffed, there is a self-service ticket machine which commuters and travellers can rely on. During off-peak hours Monday to Friday, there is an hourly Maesteg – Cardiff Central – Cheltenham Spa service in each direction. There are also trains to Cardiff Central, Nottingham and Birmingham New Street. However, this service does not run on a Sunday.
