The Top 5 Things To Do On A Sunday Afternoon In Amsterdam

Any of you that read the blog regularly will be familiar with our series on what you should do on a Sunday afternoon when you first move to a new city. There’s no particular reason that says you have to do these things on a Sunday afternoon, but Sunday afternoons are great for strolling around and getting a feel for your new city.

So if you’re planning to move to Amsterdam, here’s a few things we think you should do one Sunday afternoon.

Visit the Heineken brewery

Amsterdam is famous for many things and one of them is being home to the world’s greatest beer: Heineken. You can visit the brewery where the famous lager is produced to find out what goes into brewing one of the world’s favourite drinks.

See Amsterdam’s famous flower markets

Holland is one of the largest exporters of beautiful flowers in the whole or Europe. Any visitor or new inhabitant of Amsterdam has to visit The Bloemenmarkt which floats on the edge of the Singel canal. You’ll be hard pushed to find a wider variety of flowers in one place than the Bloemenmarkt. You’ll easily be able to find something pretty to take home to your new abode.

Cycle around the city

Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most cycle friendly cities, there are almost as many cyclists as there are drivers. One of the best ways to see the city is to hire bikes from one of the city’s many cycle hire outlets. You can cheaply hire cycles for a day, a weekend or even a week and ride for as long as you feel like. Riding along the canals is a beautiful way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Visit the city’s restaurants and cafes

Amsterdam is full of amazing places to eat and drink. Some of the hippest cafes and restaurants in Europe are dotted across the city centre. Some of our favourites include Pont 13 – an old boat converted into a restaurant and De Kas, which means green house in Dutch. The restaurant is split into two, half a dining area with a glass roof and the other half is an actual greenhouse where the produce served in the restaurant is grown.

See the city’s famous street art

Amsterdam is full of amazing street art. An afternoon stroll around the city centre will bring you in contact with some amazing and inspiring pieces that change all the time. Artists from around the world like Stinkfish from Columbia and C215 from France have all contributed to Amsterdam’s collection of street art. There are local events like Beer and Paint where local artists can be found decorating the walls with their original and often colourful designs.
