How Much Do Removals Cost?

Moving home is one of life’s biggest milestones, and it’s natural to want a clear idea of the costs before you start planning. Although no two moves are exactly alike, understanding what might influence the price can help you to plan your budget and avoid any unexpected surprises.

The cost of a house move depends on factors such as the size of your property, how much you’re moving, the distance involved, and any additional services you need.

To help you get a realistic picture of how much it costs to move home, we’ve put together a guide based on the moves we carry out every day, including typical price ranges and the factors that can affect your quote.

Average removal costs by home size

The size of your home is one of the main factors that affects the cost of a move. The table below shows typical price ranges for local UK removals based on property size.

Home size Average local removal cost
1 bedroom £500 – £1,000
2 bedroom £500 – £1,000
3 bedroom £750 – £1,500
4 bedroom £1,000 – £2,000
5 bedroom or more £2,000 – £2,500

These figures are UK averages across our network and cover a standard local move (removal team, vehicle, and standard care of your belongings). They’re a starting point, not a fixed price; your actual quote depends on how much you’re moving, access at both properties, and any extra services you add.

Moving further afield? Long-distance removal costs

Distance is another one of the biggest factors that impacts the cost of a move. Longer journeys involve more travel time, fuel, and logistical planning, which is reflected in the overall price.

The table below shows typical price ranges for long-distance removals based on property size.

Home size Average long-distance removal cost
1 bedroom £1,500 – £2,000
2 bedroom £1,500 – £2,500
3 bedroom £2,000 – £3,000
4 bedroom £3,000 – £4,000
5 bedroom or more £3,500 – £5,000

As with local moves, these figures are intended as a guide. The final cost will depend on factors such as the distance travelled, the volume of belongings being moved, property access, and any additional services you require. For an accurate quote tailored to your move, we recommend booking a pre-move survey.

What affects the cost of your removal?

Every move is different, which is why no two removal quotes are exactly the same. The final cost will depend on a number of factors, including:

  • The volume of your belongings: More items, or larger and heavier pieces of furniture, mean more time and often a bigger vehicle.
  • Distance: A local move is usually priced differently to a long-distance one, as above.
  • Access at both properties: Narrow streets, no parking, flights of stairs, or a lack of a lift can all affect how long the move takes.
  • Additional services: Packing, storage, and other optional services will affect the overall cost.

For an accurate quotation, we recommend arranging a pre-move survey. This allows us to assess exactly what needs to be moved, discuss any access requirements or additional services, and provide a tailored quote based on your specific move. It’s free, with no obligation to proceed.

What’s included in a standard removal quote?

A standard Britannia removal quote typically includes the removal team, vehicle/s, transport of your belongings, and the careful loading and unloading of your items on moving day.

Your quote will be tailored to your move, but the core service is designed to take the stress and heavy lifting out of moving home. If you need additional support, such as packing, storage, or insurance, these can be added to your quote as optional extras.

Optional extras and what they cost

Packing service

Our professional packing service can be tailored to suit your needs. Whether you’d like us to pack your whole home or simply take care of delicate, valuable, or difficult-to-pack items, we’ll ensure everything is prepared safely for the journey ahead.

Below are guide prices for how much our packing service costs:

Home size Average packing service cost
Small home (1–2 bedrooms) £100 – £300
Medium home (3–4 bedrooms) £300 – £400
Large home (5 or more bedrooms) £300 – £600

Removals insurance

Many home contents insurance policies don’t automatically cover belongings while they’re being moved, so it’s worth checking your level of cover before moving day. We can also talk you through the protection options available for your move.

Below are guide prices for removals insurance costs:

Home size Average insurance cost
1–2 bedroom £50
3–4 bedroom £200
5 or more bedroom £300

Storage

Need somewhere safe to keep your belongings between moves? We can arrange secure short- or long-term storage and organise everything as part of your removal service if required.

Because storage costs depend on factors such as the volume of items being stored and the length of time they’re kept, prices can vary significantly. Your local Britannia team will be happy to provide you with a tailored storage quotation alongside your removal quote.

How to keep your removal costs down

There are a few simple ways to help keep your removals costs under control.

  • Arrange a pre-move survey: An accurate survey helps us understand exactly what’s involved, reducing the risk of unexpected costs and ensuring you only pay for the services you need.
  • Declutter before moving day: The less you have to move, the less time, space, and labour may be required. Selling, donating, or recycling unwanted items before your move can make a real difference.
  • Handle some of the packing yourself: If you’re comfortable packing everyday items, you can reserve our professional packing service for fragile, valuable, or difficult-to-pack belongings.
  • Be prepared on moving day: Having boxes packed, labelled, and ready to go before the removal team arrives helps the move run smoothly and efficiently.

How far in advance should I book removals?

We recommend booking your removal as soon as you have a confirmed moving date. Generally, two weeks’ notice is usually enough, but the earlier you book, the more availability you’re likely to have.

This is particularly important during busy periods, such as the summer months, bank holiday weekends, and the end of the month, when demand for removal services is often at its highest.

If your move is less than two weeks away, don’t panic – just get in touch with your local Britannia branch and we’ll do our best to help.
