Moving to Romsey

The medieval market town of Romsey is situated in the Test Valley Area, close to the south coast of England. It is located just 7 miles from Southampton, 11 miles from Winchester, and Salisbury is only 17 miles away, so there are plenty of work and Ieisure opportunities nearby. However, Romsey offers a calmer pace of life with the feel of a pretty country town, proud of its character and traditions. There is lots of history in Romsey, with the beautiful 12th Century Abbey dominating the medieval streets in the town centre. There are many other notable buildings as well, many of which have been beautifully restored. There are still weekly markets on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays which bring the locals and lots of visitors into Romsey. In addition, a local farmers’ market is held on the first Sunday of each month which showcases a range of fabulous local produce.

Most of the properties in Romsey feature the traditional red brick that you see across Hampshire, but there is quite a lot of diversity in the local housing stock. If you are looking for something more modern, there are also a number of new housing developments in Romsey and the surrounding area.

Living in Romsey with a family

If you are moving to Romsey with your children, you won’t be short of places to visit during weekends and holidays.  Romsey Rapids is a public sports complex with an exciting swimming pool boasting more than a few unusual features. There is a pirate ship, water flumes, bubble seats and more, making it a really fun experience for all ages. It also has a soft play centre and an adventure golf course onsite too.

Romsey is also the nearest town to Paultons Park, a beautifully landscaped theme park which is also home to the famous Peppa Pig World. There are more than 70 rides to enjoy across several themed zones within the park, with a great mix of large adrenaline-fuelled rollercoasters and smaller pleasure rides to enjoy. Paultons Park is a full day out and is very popular with little and big kids alike!

If you want something a little calmer, you can visit Broadlands Park – the home of the aristocratic Mountbatten family – for a guided tour around the property. The grounds are also the location for some large-scale public events such as The Gardens Show held in the month of July, and The Romsey Agricultural and Horse Show which is held in September.

Shopping and eating out in Romsey

As well as the traditional butchers, greengrocers and florists that you might expect to find in an historic town like Romsey, the town’s thriving High Street is also home to independent retailers selling designer clothing, antiques and homewares among other things. It even has its own department store, Bradbeers.

The range of cafes, pubs and restaurants is extensive as well, with French, Thai, Indian and British cuisine all featuring.

Romsey’s gardens and landscaped areas

Romsey is a very pretty place to live, especially in the summer months when the flowers are in full bloom, and it has a large number of green spaces. The War Memorial Park is well maintained and makes the most of the River Test, which runs through it. It boasts a café, children’s play area, tennis courts, a Victorian bandstand and plenty of seating to relax in the surroundings.

The Sir Harold Hillier Gardens and arboretum complex covers 180 acres of land, and hosts a huge number of events each year including wine tastings, yoga session and art workshops, so this is a regular favourite with Romsey’s residents.

Mottisfont House and Gardens are owned by the National Trust, and feature a riverside walkway, an ancient spring, a 20th century art exhibition, a beautiful rose garden, woodland walks, a play area for children and a shop where you can purchase plants and gifts.
