Days Out in the West Midlands
The West Midland Safari Park in Bewdley, Worcestershire, allows visitors to drive through a variety of different environments teeming with exotic wildlife. Start in the African Plains and sight white rhino, zebra, and ostrich. In the Wild Asia section there are gargantuan Asian water buffalo and the majestic sambar deer. The Carnivores section is home to regal tigers, lions, and cheetahs. However, visitors are often enamoured with the pride in Elephant Valley. WMSP is also home to other animal attractions that can be enjoyed on foot, and a theme park for the dare devils!
From medieval fortress to Elizabethan palace, Kenilworth Castle has been at the centre of England’s affairs for much of its 900-year history. The castle and its grounds tell the tales of the Normans and Tudor Kings, as well as Queen Elizabeth I and her scandalous relationship with Robert Dudley. Throughout the year there are a number of historical live sieges and re-enactment days, as well as Halloween tours, birds of prey displays, and Christmas festivities.
One of the West Midlands’ best and most affordable days out is Batsford Arboretum and garden centre. However, this is a garden centre like no other, and the café and displays are championed by all who visit. The arboretum was created in the late 1800s by Lord Redesdale and spans 56 acres. There are flowers and trees in the arboretum which you cannot find anywhere else in the world, as well as a number of British wildlife species who call the untouched landscape home.
Famous Faces of the West Midlands
Many famous faces have called the West Midlands home, and the county has produced many recognisable faces from the world of TV, film, and music. 1950 was a great year for Smethwick; TV actress Liza Goddard and national treasure Julie Walters were both born in the Sandwell town. Famous as being part of The Goodies, Bill Oddie went to Halesowen Grammar School. Funny men Frank Skinner and Lenny Henry were also both born in the West Midlands, Frank hailing from West Bromwich and Lenny from Dudley.
The West Midlands has also produced some song birds. Back in 1946, Neville John Holder (better known as Noddy Holder) was born in Walsall in 1946. Robert Plan, lead singer of Led Zeppelin, was born in West Bromwich. Wolverhampton have had their fair share of talent too, soul singer Beverly Knight was born there in 1973, and twenty years later, Liam Payne – of One Direction fame – was also born in the city.
