The prospect of moving abroad is exciting and daunting, but when you are taking this next step alone, it can just be overwhelming. But in reality, it is a very liberating experience if you completely embrace the change. We look through 4 of the ways and reasons you will find moving abroad alone freeing and beneficial to you.
You Change the Direction of Your Life
Moving abroad alone enables you to take control of your life and change the direction that it may be going in. Whether that is because you want to spice things up a little, or because you want to start new, going it alone will give you the opportunity to be the one in the drivers’ seat. You need to be prepared that this won’t be a smooth journey, and there are going to be some bumps along the way – but they are all worth it for the freedom that is moving away alone.
Make sure you are prepared for this move abroad and have all your affairs in order before jumping ship and starting a new. It might be incredibly exciting, but the transition into solo moving abroad will be a test in itself, and you must be ready for that. Keep in consideration that everyone will have an opinion on this lifestyle change, and some of the views will not be positive. But if you think moving overseas alone is the right thing for you, then what is stopping you?
Embrace Being Alone
Some people are lucky in that they enjoy their own company, others have to take time to learn how to be gentle with themselves and enjoy time away from other people. Moving abroad on your own will be a test. But remember, being alone and being lonely are two separate things; you are more than likely going to feel both at least once when you move away.
But in no time, you will meet people and start to make friends. You must immerse yourself in the social side of this new country. Join a local expat community, go to events and network, and do not forget about the locals. The people you meet and choose to spend your time with will soon develop into your lifeline when you need someone most with your family and friends being back at home. Don’t worry, this will soon become your home away from home.
Enjoy the Culture
After your move, and once you’ve settled in, you will find yourself picking up the tendencies of the locals and embracing the culture as if it was your own. Don’t get us wrong, it will be a shock at first while you make yourself at home. However, once the initial shock is over, the new culture will be soaked into your veins and you won’t be able to do anything other than enjoy it.
Walking Out of Your Comfort Zone
Moving anywhere alone can be frightening, especially when it is abroad, but if you grab the opportunity with both hands you will immerse yourself into a life that is quite different from the one you led at home. Relocating to somewhere foreign and new in itself is most likely going to take you somewhat out of your comfort zone, leaving your comforts at home is a big step to take, but it is freeing and empowering. You will learn a lot about yourself and become much more comfortable with who you are as a person.
