Moving to Norfolk
Many move to Norfolk as they love the outdoors lifestyle and it means they can take advantage of the great scenery, from woodlands, forests, and chalk lands, to stunning coastline and the watery twists and turns of the Norfolk Broads. The landscape is interrupted by ancient churches, windmills, and beautiful villages with thatched cottages and quaint pubs.
Favourite past times of people lucky enough to live there include walking, cycling, sailing, and canoeing. For those who like to take things at a steadier pace, there are lots of shopping opportunities, and many beaches to relax on during the warm summer months.
There are some fantastic places to live in Norfolk, with Norwich, King’s Lynn, and Great Yarmouth being very popular. However, there are a number of lesser known towns and villages dotted around the county which benefit from sitting on the coast, the Norfolk Broads, or picturesque countryside.
Famous for its crab, the old fishing town of Cromer is a very popular location, complete with pier. Also located on the coast is Sheringham, which is a quintessential British seaside town. The town centre is rich with independent boutiques, antique shops, and markets.
Wroxham is situated on the Norfolk Broads, and is often known as the ‘Capital of the Broads’. It has stunning scenery and chocolate-box pretty cottages. Similarly, the historic town of Wymondham has plenty of museums to explore, and is home to Wymondham Abbey, which was originally founded as a Benedictine priory in 1107.
The Norfolk Broads
The Norfolk broads are a system of rivers and lakes, the majority of which are navigable. Days out and holidays on the broads have been popular since the late 1800’s, and renting a narrow boat is a popular option. The Norfolk Broads has been coined ‘Britain’s Magical Waterland’ as you meander past old historical ruins, windmills and, most importantly, pubs. The unspoilt villages on many of the routes have moorings, allowing those enjoying a day out, or holiday, to experience the offerings on dry land before setting off again.
Famous Faces of Norfolk
Sandringham has long been home to royalty. Diana, Princess of Wales, was born and grew up in Sandringham, and the Royal Family have a home there. Going back centuries, Boudica, queen of the Iceni people was born near Norwich, in a settlement near the River Wensum.
Norwich isn’t short of famous musicians and actors either. Roger Taylor, drummer of iconic rock band Queen, was born in King’s Lynn, and James Blunt is from Cley-next-the-Sea. TV favourite Amanda Holden lives near Burnham Market, and Hollywood star Hugh Jackman says his favourite pub is in Norwich and regularly visits his Mother who lives in Norfolk.
Other famous icons include Howard Carter, and Elizabeth Fry, as well as Albert Einstein who sought refuge in a cottage at near Cromer, in 1933, after fleeing Nazi Germany, and Pocahontas (her husband John Rolfe was from Heacham).
