About Thetford

Thetford is a market town in Norfolk close to the Suffolk border and just east of Thetford Forest, the largest lowland pine forest in Britain. There is evidence of a settlement at Thetford that dates back to the Iron Age, and as such, the area is rich with history. Thetford Castle was established around the Norman Conquest and Thetford Priory, one of the most important East Anglican monasteries, was founded in 1103. Both sites can now be visited to learn more about the history.

After WW2, Thetford became an ‘overspill’ town for Londoners, vastly growing in size. Now, the town is a melting pot of different cultures and heritages, with a variety of restaurants, shops and attractions around the town. It’s notable for being the location where popular TV show Dad’s Army was filmed, and the town now houses a museum dedicated to the show. There is also a leisure centre with a swimming pool, a golf club, and plenty of other opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities and sports.
