We ran a high profile social media competition back in the spring aimed at increasing brand awareness for Britannia and growing our social media follower base. The prize was £1000, and the competition was open to anyone getting married or having a civil partnership ceremony during 2018. Entrants simply needed to follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, like one of our competition posts, and leave a comment telling us how the money would help them.
We had hundreds of entries, and the day after the Royal Wedding, we drew a name out of the hat at random.
The lucky winner was Eve Kirkum from London, who is getting married in November. She was absolutely blown away when we contacted her via Facebook and subsequently by phone to confirm that she had won. She explained that she and her fiancée Pete are getting married on a very tight budget, so the prize money will make a huge difference to their day.
Eve and Pete met in 2012 whilst working at Great Ormond Street Hospital, and instantly became friends. They spent 3 years dancing around the idea of becoming a couple before finally taking the plunge, but it was clearly a great decision for them! They love going to music, theatre and sports events, but above all they enjoy visiting new places, usually via short city breaks.
When Eve decided to return to university to gain specialist nursing qualifications, Pete was incredibly supportive even though it meant trying to survive in London on one salary for several years. They had discussed tying the knot at some point, but planned to wait until Eve was working again and money wasn’t so tight. However, Pete eventually said that he just didn’t want to wait anymore and popped the question during a trip to Nice last year. The couple’s wedding is set for 9th November this year, and as a keen recycler Eve is working hard to create as many of the decorative elements herself as possible.
She commented “I entered this competition because as a student nurse, Pete has taken on all of the financial strain of the wedding planning without any complaints – I thought that a competition like this would give me a chance to do something nice for him. I was so shocked when I received the message to say I had won – I enter lots of competitions and always miss out so winning this one was amazing. In fact, I still cannot believe it and neither can he!”
Eve’s not sure where exactly the extra money will be spent at the moment, but has toyed with the idea of renting an ice cream truck as a surprise for Pete. We can’t wait to see the wedding photos in November and are sure you’ll join us in wishing them all the luck in the world for their big day.
