Moving to Islington

If you are thinking about moving to Islington, it is a greatly sought after residential area mainly due to it being the perfect place to move to for anybody seeking leisure and entertainment.

Islington is the third smallest local authority in London. A report in 2014 estimated a population of a little over 215,000 people residing in the area. It covers a number of different district areas including the well-known Angel Islington, Kings Cross and Pentonville, all of which feature on the popular board game Monopoly. Other Islington Districts include; Archway, Barnsbury, Canonbury, Clerkenwell, Farringdon, Finsbury, Finsbury Park, Highbury, Highgate, Holloway, Lower Holloway, Mildmay, Nag’s Head, Newington Green, Old Street, St Luke’s Tufnell Park and Upper Holloway.

Like most of London, Islington house prices are significantly higher than the majority of other areas within the United Kingdom. In 2022 the average property sold for over £900K. This figure is probably lowered due to the fact that flats made up most of the real estate sales in the area. The average sale price for a terraced property was over £1.5M and the average sale price for a semi-detached house was £1.7M.

Islington Transport Links

Travelling to and from Islington is fairly simple when using public transport. Islington has 10 underground stations located in its borough. The majority of these stations are on the Northern, Piccadilly and Victoria lines, making Islington a key area for manoeuvring around London.

There are also 5 over ground stations and six train stations available. Following a government census in 2011, over 22% of those living in Islington professed to use one of the above transport systems to get to work.

Around 10% said they used a bus, minibus or coach while a further 16% claimed they worked close enough to walk or cycle to work.

Things to do in Islington

Islington is a hub of social activity, entertainment and leisure. There are a number of different areas within the borough that attract large numbers of visitors from across the city, drawn in by the different services available.

From the popular Islington cinemas to the vast streets of shops and restaurants in The Angel Islington has everything you need is within a short distance.

Old Street also attracts a large number of visitors. The area stretches through Islington to Shoreditch, Hackney and is home to some impressive nightlife, with ping-pong bars to open top bars, with giant slides, open late into the early hours of the morning.

Islington Schools

There are currently 15 primary schools within Islington. Some of them include Rotherfield Primary School, The New North Academy, Thornhill Primary School and William Tyndale Primary School.

Two secondary schools can be found in Islington, The City of London Academy which is a mixed-gender school and Elizabeth Garret Anderson School (EGA) which is an all-girls secondary school. If you are willing to travel a little further afield there are eight more secondary schools within a reasonable commuting distance. Holloway School, for example, is just 10 minutes cycle from Highbury and Islington Train Station.

Islington is also the home to City and Islington College, a 25-year-old educational establishment that has served over a quarter of a million young people.
