Moving to Stockport

Just seven miles south-east of Manchester city centre is the large town of Stockport. Historically, Stockport was known as the largest manufacturer or hats in the UK, but this came to an end in 1997. Today, the town is in the midst of an extensive regeneration scheme run by the local council, with a continuing plan to build more homes and town centre projects.

Buyers considering moving to Stockport can snap up reasonably priced terraced properties (many boasting three bedrooms), but there are a diverse range of properties available for varying budgets from apartments to mansions.

Schools in Stockport

There are a number of great pre-schools and nurseries in Stockport, as well as many respected primary schools, such as Alexandra Park Primary School, Didsbury Road and St Paul’s Catholic primary school, are amongst many rated ‘outstanding’.

As for secondary schools in the Stockport area, though the standards are not as strong as the primary schools, there are some rated as outstanding – Castle Hill High School, and Heaton School.

Transport Links Stockport

Stockport sits on the M60, the circular motorway which rings around Manchester and connects to other main arterial roads and motorways. Driving into Manchester city centre isn’t recommended in peak hours due to traffic, but it can take just over half an hour if the roads are quiet.

Stockport railway station is located on Grand Central Way and has six busy platforms. Local services run to Liverpool Lime Street, Manchester Piccadilly, Preston, Chester, Crewe and Stoke-on-Trent. If you want to travel further afield there are trains to London Euston, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, Norwich and South Wales.

Stockport bus station opened in 1981 and all of Stockport’s sixty-five services call there. National Express coaches from London Victoria also stop in Stockport.
